Tutorial: Twisty Flower Headband

Materials needed:

Hot glue and hot glue gun

Iron and ironing board

Felt

Headband

Scissors

Double Twisty Flowers

You will need to make 2 separate flowers. I cut my strip 1/2" and 1" wide by 22" long. Cutting strips off a fat quarter works well for this. I then ironed them in half.

I cut a circle out of felt and folded an edge over of my strip of fabric and hot glued it on. I then began twisting my material.

Glue the material down as you twist it around the center.

It should begin to look like this.

When you reach the end of your fabric, tuck and glue under the bottom of the flower. Trim the edges of your felt circle so they don't show.

The tuck under is seamless from the top.

Single Twisty Flower

I used the same length but about 1 1/2" wide. This is a thicker material, too, so that adds bulk.

By cutting out the felt circle previous to gluing, it got annoying that the circle I cut was crowding me out. For this flower I just glued it onto a corner of felt. I knew I'd have plenty of room to circle.

I glued down my end and then tucked over one of the side to give it a curling start.

The same as above: twist and glue.

When your fabric is reaching its end, trim your felt and then tuck the extra fabric under your flower.

Like so.

Try on your headband and see where you want to position your flower. Hold your flower in place as you take the headband off and then hot glue your flower in the desired position.

Flower as Clip or Pin

If you wanted to use this as a hair clip, sweater pin, purse decorator, etc, you are set to do it this way. You already have felt on the back of your twisty flower.

Take a clip and another piece of felt. Open your clip and hot glue the square piece of felt to the inside of the top of the clip. Then glue it face up to the bottom of your flower. It should look like this. Having the felt between the top of the clip makes it easier to hot glue without sticking together and gives it a finished look.

You can then add a pin to the back so your flower has multiple uses.

Little twisty flower clips would be so cute in your hair or clipped on your purse. They would also work good as a girl baby shower gift combined with the interchanging head band for babies. This is a head band that you can change the clip to different flowers or accessories. I haven't made one of these headbands, but I know it's can be made of white nylon and hot glue.
